Why Did You Choose to Play the Saxophone? Stories of Passion and Persistence

Image The saxophone, with its rich tones and expressive versatility, has captivated musicians for generations. But what inspires someone to pick up this iconic instrument? For many, the journey begins unexpectedly—through a friend’s invitation, a teacher’s suggestion, or even a family legacy. Here, saxophonists share their stories, revealing how a single decision led to a lifelong love affair with music.

A Friend’s Invitation, a Lifetime of Joy For one musician, it all started with a simple question from a friend: “Join the school band with me?” Taking up the saxophone alongside his friend became a defining choice. Though his friend later passed away, the gift of music endured. “Fifty years later, I still practice and perform regularly,” he reflects. “That moment brought me a lifetime of happiness.”

From Clarinet to Saxophone: A Natural Transition Many saxophonists began on the clarinet, finding the transition seamless. One recalls their band director’s directive: “Take the school’s tenor sax home over the summer and learn it.” Decades later, at a gig, they finally thanked that director for the pivotal push. Another, initially a bass clarinetist, was handed a baritone sax and told to figure it out. “I spent a weekend with a tuner, learning fingerings,” they laugh. “That was over ten years ago—never looked back.”

Overcoming Challenges—And Rediscovering the Sax Not every journey was smooth. One parent, juggling family life in the 1980s, practiced with a sock stuffed in the sax’s bell to muffle sound—only to quit after struggling with a bleeding lip from an upside-down mouthpiece. Decades later, they bought a sax on eBay, took proper lessons, and now busk in Sydney. “I’m still intermediate,” they admit, “but I play what I love, and that’s enough.”

A Family Legacy For some, the saxophone is a cherished link to the past. One musician inherited their father’s sax after he could no longer play. “He once banned me from touching it because I smoked before playing,” they recall. “Now, I understand why—I’d scold anyone who did the same!” The instrument remains a heartfelt connection to their dad.

From Boredom to Passion A former glockenspiel player, bored by limited parts, switched to alto sax for a new challenge. “I figured, It’s like clarinet, right? Best decision ever.” Similarly, a guitarist drawn to the sax’s “funky, soulful” vibe in school later returned to it in retirement, expanding his repertoire across nine instruments. “Next up: trumpet,” he jokes. “Might as well be my own horn section!”

A Lifelong Lesson These stories share a common thread: the saxophone’s enduring appeal lies in its ability to inspire, challenge, and connect. As one musician wisely notes, “This time in your life is just a blip. Learn as much as you can—especially while you’re young.” Whether by chance or choice, the saxophone continues to shape lives, one note at a time.

For aspiring musicians, the message is clear: sometimes, the best decisions begin with a simple “Why not?”—and end with a lifetime of music. Image
