How to Properly Clean a Saxophone

-
Never Clean the Inside of the Saxophone with a Cloth!
- A cleaning cloth can get stuck in the saxophone’s neck, making it difficult to remove.
- This is especially dangerous for soprano saxophones, as it may damage the inner of the tube.
- Many saxophone tone holes are normally closed. Wiping inside may shift them, leading to air leaks.
- The pads may also stop sealing properly.
-
How to Remove Moisture After Playing
- Simply wipe the outside of the saxophone.
- For the inside, let the instrument air dry in a ventilated place for 15-20 minutes.
- Since the saxophone is made of brass, never wash it with water—water accelerates oxidation and can cause rust.
-
Avoid Using Pull-Through Swabs and Spit Sticks
- Pull-through swabs may damage the pads' seal, causing air leaks, or even get stuck inside.
- Spit sticks, especially non-absorbent ones, are not recommended. Saliva is alkaline, and using them may lead to double corrosion, speeding up oxidation.
-
The Best Way to Maintain Your Saxophone
- After playing, disassemble the instrument and let it air dry for 15-20 minutes.
- Then store it in its case and zip it up.
- This is the simplest yet safest method to keep your saxophone in good condition.
