What should we do if we have trouble following the accompaniment?

31-03 2025

When you start to learn the saxophone, due to the fingering is not skilled enough, the breath is not stable, often “according to their own speed and needs” to “free” to blow the tune, accompaniment, it is like to give yourself “rules” in general, and different from their usual playing habits, a little uncomfortable. Once the accompaniment comes up, it is like “setting a rule” for myself, and it is not the same as my usual playing habits, so I am not used to it. Often, you will encounter some problems such as: We don't know where to “start”, especially when there is no “drum beat” and no main melody in the accompaniment, we don't know how to start; What is the key of the accompaniment? Are the fingerings familiar to you?

How does the accompaniment begin and end with interludes and repetitions?
The tempo of the accompaniment is not the same as what you usually practice, so you can't catch up with it, and you are often carried along by the accompaniment, which makes it easy for you to drag your feet.

There are also some people who play their own instruments without accompaniment, and the result is that the accompaniment has nothing to do with your playing, so there are two skins.

So what's the solution to these problems?

  1. Find the original song and the sheet music, listen to the original song with your ears and your eyes on the sheet music, and listen to it a few times first. The main purpose is to familiarize yourself with the basic rhythm of the song and its basic structure. Some of you may also want to listen to the flavor of the tune. Rhythm can be said to be the soul of a tune, if the rhythm is not allowed, you play well, others will listen to it very awkward.
  2. listen to a few times after the basic understanding of the rhythm of the tune, the mouth (heart) according to the sheet music to hum along with the original song a few times (preferably sing the sheet music, rather than sing the lyrics), to further consolidate the feeling of the tune after listening to the song and deepen the impression.
  3. The next step is to practice. Take the saxophone, determine the key of the original song, with the same key (fingering), first blowing with the original song, at first may not be able to keep up, a few more times will be better and better.
  4. When you have no problem playing along with the original song, you can start playing along with the accompaniment. It's best to practice with an accompaniment that is in the same key as the original song (otherwise you'll have to put your mind to new fingerings, which will affect the effect of following the accompaniment). Practice 2-3 times today, and 2-3 times tomorrow, and you'll basically have this song down in a week.
  5. If you encounter an accompaniment that is not in the same key as the original song, it will require you to have a basic grasp of the accompaniment's key (fingering) in order to be able to do so, and you can also familiarize yourself with and practice your fingering by blowing on the tune over and over again. (The advantage of a short score here is that, although the tuning may be different, the score is exactly the same)
  6. To develop the habit of singing sheet music, usually nothing when you have to practice, only learn to sing the sheet music, you can realize from “blowing notes” to “blowing songs” of the metamorphosis. Because blowing the saxophone is the brain, fingers, mouth, breath, lips and tongue and other body parts of the “integrated movement”, if you can first put the score installed in the heart, then in the blowing Sa when you can have more energy to use in the flavor of the tune performance, blowing out of the tune is good to listen to (at least can be different). At this time the sheet music only plays a key place “hint” role.
  7. Don't be afraid of the fact that the musical style of the accompaniment is not the same as that of the original song. In fact, when you master the rhythm and melody of the tune, you can follow the accompaniment according to their own feelings to try to blow, try a few times to be able to grasp the basic structure of the accompaniment (at this time, the player's sense of music will play a very good role in helping).
  8. Some friends are through the K song or other methods to blow their own with the accompaniment of the song recorded slowly to enjoy themselves or to share with friends to enjoy, this time to pay attention to the volume of the accompaniment and play the saxophone volume harmony, which one is too large will affect the enjoyment of the effect.
