What should we do if there are strange sounds when playing saxophone

08-04 2025

Sax is widely used in jazz and modern popular light music. The main characteristic of Sax is its beautiful and varied tone, deep and calm, full of emotions, gentle and sad, like an echo in an echo. In moments of silence, no other instrument can make such wonderful sounds. Listening to a saxophone play before bedtime and falling asleep is such a wonderful thing.

However, what problem lead to these strange sounds when we playing saxphones?

  1. There is a problem with the combination of the mouthpiece and reeds. Because not every mouthpiece can be paired with every type of reeds.
  2. The reeds is too hard or too soft.
  3. The opening of the mouthpiece (i.e. the mouth wind) is too small. Because most of the original mouthpiece on the instrument have a small opening, regardless of the brand.
  4. Mouth shape issue. Hold the mouthpiece with your mouth and blow a 'doo' sound to play the saxophone. The beginning blows harder. Pay attention to your breath — it should sink downward. For long tone practice, play four tongued notes followed by one long note without taking a breath in between. The tone should remain steady.
